Crude oil in Burrard Inlet Risk Assessment May, 2010

5. Determine the risk

  • A spill of 20 million gallons of crude oil will travel into Indian Arm, Burrard Inlet, English Bay, False Creek and Georgia Strait. Based on the Exxon Valdez oil spill, I estimate that the oil will reach Nanaimo by day four and Courtney by day eight. The Exxon Valdez spill traveled 470 miles in 56 days.

  • Such a spill would be an ecological disaster.

  • Real estate values would decline.

  • Vancouver will become known for the largest oil spill on the Pacific Coast.

  • This would cause an evaporation of the “Supernatural” and “Green” image in B.C.

  • Port closure: Fouled ships and fouled water. Cargo will be rerouted to American ports for an indeterminate time. Perhaps forever. Railways and trucking impacted.

  • The end of tourism and fishing.
